Some weeks ago, a representative from CIC’s international team visited the factory in Taoyuan, Taiwan, to witness the customer acceptance testing for a group of motor-starting compensators, one of CIC’s speciality products.

 “Motor-starting compensators” are a type of autotransformers specifically designed for the starting of inductive motors and to effectively reduce the starting current.

In addition to these motor-starting compensators, also called motor-starting autotransformers, CIC also offers the closely related product “motor-starting reactors.” A motor-starting reactor serves as a series reactor between the motor and the power source. When starting the motor, the reduction of the starting voltage and starting current is accomplished through the voltage drop created by the reactor.

CIC’s motor-starting autotransformers and motor-starting reactors are a type of mechanical motor starters. Moisture-resistant and self-extinguishing, these products feature coils that are vacuum cast in Class-F epoxy resin, noted for its insulation properties.

Easy to set up and operate, these motor-starting autotransformers and motor-starting reactors are further characterized by their low-loss and low-noise performance. These motor starters are well-suited for the starting of induction motors for various types of equipment such as central air systems and pumps in public constructions, factories, and commercial buildings.

Compared to electronic-type motor starters, these motor-starting compensators and reactors are economical and reliable alternatives that are simple to use, mechanically solid, exceptionally durable, and nearly maintenance-free.

Further ensuring product reliability, CIC conducts rigorous routine tests for its motor-starting reactors and motor-starting compensators. Each unit or product must undergo and pass these tests before it can be delivered to a customer (See Addendum).

Routine tests provided by CIC for its motor-starting compensators and motor-starting reactors can include the following: 

Motor-Starting Compensators or Autotransformers

  1. Measurement of winding resistance
  2. Measurement of voltage ratio
  3. Measurement of short-circuit impedance and load loss
  4. Measurement of no-load loss and current
  5. Applied voltage test
  6. Induced voltage withstand test
  7. Partial discharge measurement

Note: Temperature-rise tests are also offered, for which testing conditions and sampling quantities are agreed upon by both the buyer and the seller.
